Choice of Data Communications for IOT

One of the biggest challenge in implementation IOT system is the availability of Data Communication Network and how much it costs.

The first to pick is Lorawan when it is available. Lorawan is designed specifically for IOT network to transmit small payload of data from the sensor to the IOT dashboard. It leverages on unlicensed frequency, low power and low data digital modulation. As a consequence, the total cost of ownership is the lowest. The main deterrence is the availability as it is not necessarily available in any place from the network provider. Of course, our customer has the option to build their own Lorawan network. We can help you set this up from scratch.

The second in the list which has higher cost than Lorawan but has wider coverage and availability is 4G and soon-to-come 5G cellular network. Since IOT typical payload per sensor is small (~ 50 byte), we can subscribe to the smallest data package offered by mobile network operator. To increase the reliability and at the same time, have the load balancing, Apointure offers the cellular modem that has two or more simcards from different providers in a single box. As an option, to extend the reach, the modem can be coupled with an external outdoor antenna.

The last but yet has the widest coverage is satellite communication. It is practically available everywhere, ubiquitous, within the satellite coverage. The choice of the satellite network is wider than ever, with new constellation comprising of not only Geostationary, but also Medium Earth (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The satellites with multiple bands, orbits, and high throughput are available as we speak. As a result, it drives up the supply to meet the demand which in turn drive the price per mbps down to the level the world has never seen before in satellite communication market. We, Apointure, will provide the most cost-effective satellite connectivity for your IOT needs.
